What families & students say
“In the past year, my daughters have learned more technique than they have in the prior 6 years with another studio, and they are having a blast while doing it.”
“The teachers are extraordinary, with caliber way beyond what I've experienced at other schools in the area, but also are encouraging and supportive.”
“I’ve since heard from many friends that this is the case across many Long Island dance schools where the focus is on competition or the end of year recital.”
“Not only are Jerome and Michelle true professionals and masters of their craft, but they are genuinely great people who care about each and every child training at their studio.”
“Her sense of self confidence has exploded in ways that have extended well beyond after-school dance – in her reading, her grades, her friendships and in-school activities.”
From the reviews
My daughter has been dancing at ATDW for several years, and loves every minute of the multiple hours she spends there every week. The teachers are extraordinary, with caliber way beyond what I've experienced at other schools in the area, but also are encouraging and supportive.
Every leap begins with a push - and my daughter Ashley has been shaped by two of the finest mentors an artist could hope for. Some journeys move step by step. Ashley’s has soared in leaps, lifts, and fearless bounds - each defined by artistry, resilience, and love of the craft.
We just moved onto the Island and I was looking for a home for theater and dance for my two children. American Theater Dance Workshop was just that! Amazing faculty, guest artists and space, but more importantly, the professional, caring and thoughtful environment Jerome and Michelle create, within that space.
Amazing instructors, amazing community of dancers. Being a part of ATDW has been an incredible experience for my daughter.
Adult ballet at American Theater Dance Workshop
American Theater Dance Workshop runs classes for grown-ups — confirmed on their own site. If you've never taken ballet, or you're coming back to it after years away, this is for you — and a good studio genuinely welcomes a nervous first-timer. A few things worth asking before you go. First, which class to start in — look for one labeled "absolute beginner" or "adult beginner" rather than an open or "all levels" class, so you learn the fundamentals at the right pace. Second, drop-in or term — many adult programs let you pay per class to try it, then move to a term or monthly package once you're hooked. Third, what to wear — comfortable clothes you can move in, plus socks or bare feet, are plenty for a first class; you won't need a leotard or ballet shoes to walk in the door. It's never too late for first position.
Your first ballet class at American Theater Dance Workshop
Nervous about walking into your first class? Almost everyone is — and a good studio expects beginners, whether your dancer is five or you're returning at fifty. Here's what to know. What to wear: comfortable clothes you can move in, with socks or bare feet; a leotard and tights are nice if you have them, but not required, and pointe shoes are years down the road — never day one. What to expect: class usually starts at the barre with slow, simple movements to warm up, then moves to the center — follow along, copy the teacher, and don't worry about getting it "right" the first time. Arrive early: come 10–15 minutes ahead to change, find a spot, and let the teacher know it's a first class so they can keep an eye out. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.
