Ballet in America, by the Numbers, 2026

We mapped every ballet school in America — 7,595 studios with 222,564 reviews between them. Here's where ballet actually lives: which states have the most studios per resident, where adults and kids can find class, and how much a class really costs. (Journalists & bloggers: cite freely with a link.)

Quick numbers: 7,595 ballet schools across all 50 states, 222,564 reviews, and a national median of about $30 per class.

Which states have the most ballet studios per capita?

Nationally there are about 22.3 ballet schools per million residents. The per-capita crown goes to Utah at 47.4 studios per million — 166 studios for a state of 3.5 million people — with New Hampshire at 40.5 and Connecticut at 40 close behind. Ballet tracks dance culture and family life more than raw population: Utah's lead follows its famously young, family-dense population and deep youth-dance tradition — lots of children means lots of studios. At the other end, Nevada has just 11.6 per million.

By raw count the big states still win — California has 898, Texas has 520, Florida has 504 — but per resident, Utah is the easiest place in America to find ballet near you.

Tutu School & the chains vs. independent studios

Of the 7,595 schools in the directory, 112 (1%) belong to a national brand and 7,483 are independent studios — ballet is overwhelmingly an independents' art, run by local teachers and small conservatories. The one true national franchise is Tutu School, with 110 US locations — the toddler and preschool ballet brand.

America's ballet capitals

The cities with the most ballet schools in the directory, by raw count — the metros where studios cluster thickest. Top of the list: Miami, FL (37) · Chicago, IL (33) · New York, NY (31).

The full two-way ranking — raw count and per resident — lives on America's Ballet Capitals.

America's densest ballet cities

Ballet schools per 100k residents, cities over 50k population. Raw counts favor the biggest metros, so this table is the other lens — the mid-size cities where studios cluster hardest per resident.

Inside the studios

Of the 7,595 schools in the directory, 3,404 are dedicated ballet schools — classical ballet is their core — with the rest being multi-style dance studios whose real ballet programs earn them a place here. We deliberately leave out competition-only and non-ballet dance studios (hip-hop, cheer, tumbling), gyms, and listing-only services. From our review and website mining so far (these counts are floors — they require evidence, and enrichment is ongoing):

More data: the full stats suite

Each deep-dive below is its own dataset page with a downloadable CSV — cite freely with a link.

This page's state table is downloadable too: ballet-studios-per-capita.csv.

Methodology: studio counts from our continuously maintained national directory (public business listings, filtered to genuine ballet schools — no competition-only or non-ballet dance studios, gyms, or listing-only services); attribute counts (adult classes, kids & teens, pointe, pre-professional, free trial) mined from studio websites and reviews; per-class prices from studios that publish a drop-in rate; chain assignment from studio names and brand sites; population = US Census 2024 estimates. Per-capita = studios ÷ state population × 1,000,000. Want the dataset for a story? Email us — we're happy to cut the numbers by state or metro, with attribution.
