My 5 1/2 year old starting doing Tutu School’s streamed ballet classes 3 months ago and loves them so much; before they even opened the beautiful new studio in our neighborhood, her curiosity was sparked.
Miss Phoebe is the epitome of ballet teaching perfection. Her patience knows no bounds with the little ones and her calm, welcoming demeanor makes a ballerina’s day. My 3 year old looks forward to dancing at the studio each week more than she looks forward to Christmas.
My daughter is taking remote classes at Tutu School, and she enjoys it very much. Every teacher we've met is compassionate, patient and wonderful with kids. I love how they incorporate storytelling into dance education, giving students background to famous ballets.
My daughter has gone to two in-person classes and loves it! The studio is super clean and they are taking all Covid precautions (dance bubbles, masks, small class etc.). The teacher Ms. Phoebe is excellent and great with the kids.
Your first ballet class at Tutu School Park Slope
Nervous about walking into your first class? Almost everyone is — and a good studio expects beginners, whether your dancer is five or you're returning at fifty. Here's what to know. What to wear: comfortable clothes you can move in, with socks or bare feet; a leotard and tights are nice if you have them, but not required, and pointe shoes are years down the road — never day one. What to expect: class usually starts at the barre with slow, simple movements to warm up, then moves to the center — follow along, copy the teacher, and don't worry about getting it "right" the first time. Arrive early: come 10–15 minutes ahead to change, find a spot, and let the teacher know it's a first class so they can keep an eye out. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.
