From the reviews
We moved to the area from Arizona three years ago, coming from a competitive dance school where my daughter began building her foundation in dance. So, we had high expectations when searching for a new studio. From the very beginning, Wilson School of Dance stood out.
New to town - we drove past the WSD on our approach to the city and I liked how it looked - so I looked up the class schedule and was delighted to see a Dance Camp for my son's age group listed for the following week. Juanita responded promptly to my query and was happy to chat and answer questions.
Wilson School of Dance has been an absolute blessing for our family. When we moved to the Charlottesville area from Northern Virginia, we were coming from a very strong and competitive studio and were concerned about finding a high-quality replacement. Wilson exceeded all our expectations.
WSD is very important to my daughter. She feels free to express herself in class. She meets dancers and has friendships from all over Charlottesville/Albemarle County because she attends this school. Juanita Wilson Duquette and her dance studio are Charlottesville institutions. However, not stale and stuck.
Your first ballet class at Wilson School of Dance
Nervous about walking into your first class? Almost everyone is — and a good studio expects beginners, whether your dancer is five or you're returning at fifty. Here's what to know. What to wear: comfortable clothes you can move in, with socks or bare feet; a leotard and tights are nice if you have them, but not required, and pointe shoes are years down the road — never day one. What to expect: class usually starts at the barre with slow, simple movements to warm up, then moves to the center — follow along, copy the teacher, and don't worry about getting it "right" the first time. Arrive early: come 10–15 minutes ahead to change, find a spot, and let the teacher know it's a first class so they can keep an eye out. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.
